Anonymous SAID:
Tyzula, marriage.
❞

When Ty Lee is six she robes herself in red and gold and knocks on Azula’s door, her sleeve flapping with every strike. Azula opens it and regards her friend coolly (even then, she did not get excited).

“I’m going to marry Zuko.” Ty Lee tells her. It makes sense: he is the only boy, even if he is too old really, and if she is supposed to be just like her sisters then she needs to get married, as Ta Min did last week. And Ty Lee feels that this is something she should let Azula know in advance.

Azula frowns and takes her hand.

“No you’re not.”

“Then who?”

Azula looks at her like she’s asked if water is wet, or what a tree is.

“Me.” And because Azula has said it, it is suddenly all so very simple and clear. “You’re going to marry me.”

Azula, Jealousy
❞

“I don’t get jealous.” Azula’s words are spat out like sparks, bright and dangerous.

“What?” Ty Lee turns to look at her from where she’s building a sandcastle, shells ringing the topmost turret. Azula tears her eyes from Mai and Zuko.

“Nothing.” She reaches over and flicks a shell from the castle. “I said nothing.”

Ty Lee shrugs and reaches over to pick it up again.

I is for Irritant and Ignite

Even the best laid plans don’t work out: even those who are born lucky must sometimes concede to the quirks of circumstance. And sometimes there are border guards at the colonies who don’t recognise the princess of the Fire Nation, even when she is standing right in front of them.

“I assure you, my credentials are there.” Azula crosses her arms and stares up at the outpost’s commander, memorising his face for the report she will send back to her father later. The man shrugs.

“You could be impostors. It’s more likely than you think. I bet anybody could sneak into the Fire Nation if they were wearing the right gear.”

“I am wearing the royal diadem.” Surely the oaf is at the right height to see it.

“Oh, come on. Anyone could make that.” The guard taps his scroll. “I can’t believe that three teenaged girls riding giant lizards are some kind of- of hit squad for the Fire Lord, led by his daughter, no less.” he laughs, high and nervous. “It’s ludicrous.”

Azula turns and looks at Ty Lee, who shrugs. Mai twitches her wrist the way she does when she’s getting ready to throw a knife. Azula rolls her eyes.

“I don’t have the time to argue with you, captain. So I’m just going to do this.” She flicks a hand and the scroll combusts, followed by the captain’s helmet. Azula ignores the man’s screams, gets back onto her lizard and, almost as an afterthought, sends another fireball to the outpost.

“That’s a bit extreme, Azula.” Mai calls over the rushing wind. Azula pretends not to hear her. There’s a time for subterfuge and careful planning and a time to set things on fire. The key, Azula has always felt, is in understanding the difference.

The Commonplace Book: B is for Ba Sing Se (Azula alphabet)

Azula’s high point is definitely taking over Ba Sing Se in season 2. I love how she’s such a brilliant strategist- and she has the power to back her plans up.

Also expect a lot of Ty Lee in these. I think she’s pretty essential to any Azula stuff.

B is for Ba Sing Se

Azula loves Ba Sing…

Yeah, I’m going to be keeping an eye on your Azula alphabet series.  The first was brilliant, and so is this.

To say Ty Lee is the younger of the two… well, you could, I suppose, since A:TLA conveniently has no concrete birthdays.  I mean, you could easily assume Ty Lee is younger because Azula is that much more mature than her, but the age-difference between them is negligible in the first place (although the Chinese Astrologer in me is quite certain that, although they’re said to be “the same age”, there was no way they were born in the same animal year).  But it’s still entirely possible that Azula is the youngest of their trio.  One of those “open to interpretation” things, to be sure.

Anyway, I’ll be keeping an eye out for more Azula goodness!

Thank you very much! (I kind of squealed when your tumblr’s name showed up on my dash)

I thought for a long time about making Ty Lee the younger one of the two, and you’ve pretty much stated the reasons why I hesitated to do so. Ultimately, I went with it because she always read as younger than Azula and Mai to me, but only by a couple of months or so. However, I imagine the age difference would be important to Azula, who seems to be quite conscious of status.

Plus, purely technically, it was a good way to differentiate the two girls without referring to them by name each time.

You see these girls? These are some of the most badass, complex characters in the history of animation. From the bamf we hail as Korra, to the tragically twisted Azula, these girls are not to be messed with. They have faced enemies, espionage, and mastered their fighting techniques, and the oldest of them is only seventeen. Thank you Mike and Bryan, for creating fantastic female characters and role models.

 Have I blogged this already?

Sod it, I’m blogging it again.

Some of the best female characters I’ve ever had the pleasure of watching on TV

Hell, some of the best female characters ever on TV.

The Duelling Tophat is so very looking forward to continue watching Avatar.

Amazing ladies <3
