Midnight finds him sitting, half-shaded by the glow of the street lamps outside. He is as at home in the dark as he can be, but the light, Natasha thinks, compliments the shadow. The sodium yellow glow halos his hair, reflects dully off the metal that shows where his old life was cut away. Silhouetted thus, in the dark, he resembles nothing so much as a ghost, an assemblage of memories held together for the moment by a thin membrane of light. He has sat in the dark to escape. Shadows have always served him well. Perhaps here, in this strange old new city where he grew up but has never been, he can hide from that young man who went to war and never came back.
