I wrote a version of this for shimmy once- I hope she’ll forgive me reusing the idea but it’s one I’ve always wanted to revisit and, well, Varric Week is something of a perfect opportunity!
I owe a lot to this dwarf. Writing that alphabet taught me so much about the craft of churning out fanfic, listening for the voice of a character and examining who they are and what their motivations might be. Varric in particular has always fascinated me, because while he claims to be detached he’s actually one of the most central characters of the story- possibly even more vital than Hawke and Anders. Dragon Age 2 is not just his story because he tells it- it’s his autobiography, just starring a different man.
Consider this a deleted scene, or perhaps part of the director’s cut of the Varric Alphabet.
V is for Varric
In another world, it happened like this:
Cassandra watches as the templars on loan from the Chantry drag the man into the room. He does not offer much resistance. It is clear that whatever fight he once had in him, it has fled along with his purpose. Cassandra has seen that look before, on the faces of mages in the Circle, or on the prisoners the Seekers take for their own shadowy ends. It is the face of a man whose story has ended before his life ran out.
