Now I’m going on an early Arctic Monkeys spree
Uuurrrgh these lyrics are so good. That’s a big part of whether I like a song, for me, and probably why I like rap music so much: there’s a button in my brain marked CLEVER WORDS YES and if a song hits that it can stay for good.
Take this, from You Probably Couldn’t See For The Lights But You Were Looking Straight At Me :
One look sends it coursing through the veins, oh how the feeling races
Back up to their brains to form expressions on their stupid faces
They don’t want to say hello, like I want to say hello
My heartbeat’s at its peak, when you’re coming up to speak
And oh I’m so tense, never tenser
Could all go a bit Frank Spencer
It’s funny and clever and it perfectly summarizes that feeling of wanting to say something to impress the person you fancy- and simultaneously despising the competition (they don’t want to say hello like I want to say hello) and realising that you’re all the same really.
